Over this last year as I have been out speaking to different audiences, I have been approached more and more by people who see me speak and want to develop the skills for speaking. I have decided to share some of my speaking tips with you.
I have included below a short extract from some material I am currently writing for speakers – this particular extract deals with how to build a quick rapport with your audience. We are planning to bring out a DVD shortly on this subject – so watch this space.
“Another effective way of creating humor at an early stage is to playfully make fun of yourself. In my case because I have a bald head I will often make reference at the beginning of presentation to some humorous link with my bald head. I may even ask the audience to repeat “Yes” to me in response to a question that I ask and then to reinforce it ask them to say “yes baldy”. This immediately puts a smile on the face and at the same time allows them to relate to a more natural human side to me, thus breaking the speaker-audience barrier that can sometimes exist initially. As a speaker this is a very powerful connection tool to develop an early stage with your audience. The more you can be authentic and real from an early start in your presentation, the more rapidly you will develop a strong connection with your audience…. Have fun!
