Cleaning Up Your Act – Start the new year with a Clean Credit File!

One of the challenges that most people face when dealing with their finances, mortgages, loans and borrowing money is dealing with their Credit Files and repairing them. Whether you are UK or non-UK based the principle is generally the same.

One method I want to share with you all is how to get credit card companies to update your files with the Credit Agencies quicker.

Most credit card companies have a nominated date in the month when they update the Credit Agencies with your file. This can be really frustrating if you have cleared a card and wish to get your file updated immediately. This approach is really only applicable if you are making a big payment – e.g. you are clearing off your card and you need your file updating quickly. It would not work every month as they will likely get annoyed with you.

Here’s what you do…..

Once you have cleared your card or made  a big payment – call the Credit Control or Accounts Payment Department of the card company. You will need to be persistent as they will often not let you through straight away. It helps to explain that you “really need” to let the Credit Agency know that you have cleared your card and that you need to get an electronic message or a fax to them from the card company as soon as possible.

Once you are through to the right department tell them what you want to do – Tell them you you need them to FAX or Email the Credit Agency in question – for example they need to fax Equifax to confirm that your card has been cleared.

I usually call the credit agency first and ask them for the fax details before calling the card company. Here are the steps:

1.    Call credit agency and tell them what you want to do and get a fax or email detail
2.    Call Card company and get through to Credit Control or Accounts
3.    Tell them what you want to do and tell them that the Credit Agency said they could FAX or email
4.    Ask them when they are going to do it
5.    Follow it up a day or two later to confirm it has taken place

One warning – you may spend quite a bit of time hanging on the phone whilst chasing the card company, so you really need to have a reason to do this.

Weather update: Snowed in! (That was for Ryan sunning it up in South Africa)

I have just learnt about Trackbacks – a great tool. I found a really cool site with a simple explanation for anyone who uses Wordpress. Check it out:

Whenever I am training and mentoring someone for Public Speaking one of the first questions I ask the person, is ” Can you name  me one characteristic that you believe makes a Public Speaker great?”    The typical responses to this is, the speaker’s voice, the way they move on stage, the message they’re delivering, the subject they are discussing, their physical presence on stage and many other characteristics.

Although these are totally valid characteristics that help define a great public speaker, it is my belief that there is one characteristic more than anything else that really truly defines a great speaker.  The characteristic I am referring to here is Certainty. When a speaker is completely aligned with their true purpose, they have a passion for what they are speaking about, and  they have complete and utter belief in the message they are delivering, then their level of certainty goes through the roof.

This is a subject I could speak about for hours, and it is a subject that I encourage new speakers to study avidly. Next time you’re watching a speaker, take notes on their level of certainty. Observe when they are delivering the message with absolute conviction and note the characteristics, body language and tonality that they use whilst delivering in that state of certainty.

A Simple Tool To Use

There is a simple physiological gesture that you can express very early in your presentation to help you establish certainty in front of your audience. However, remember that if you do something with your body language and the rest of your message, tonality and belief system are not aligned then you will very rapidly appear incongruent. This in itself leads to a state of uncertainty.

The gesture I’m referring to is sometimes called the steeple gesture or the roof gesture. This is where you stand with your feet placed slightly wider  than hip width, you take a deep breath so that you are breathing down into the belly area rather than your chest, and you bring your hands together  as though you are going to pray, spread your fingers and then keeping your fingertips touching move the palms of hands slightly apart by about 20° to  30°.

If you ever watch somebody standing in this position they automatically appear to have a certain level of confidence. The best way to get a feel for this is to practice this on a daily basis until you find the most natural position.

A great place to start would be to watch someone like Anthony Robbins who has an immense amount of Certainty as a speaker: click here to have a look at his BLOG and some short videos:

I read an interesting statistic in one of the London newspapers before Christmas (The Metro I beieve it was), that quoted the following statistics.

The number of people admitted for obesity problems to UK hospitals rocketed by 60% between 2008 and 2009. That is a serious increase. The admissions related to treatments such as organ failures, Type 2 diabetes or heart disease (directly related to obesity). It was noted that surgical procedures such as stomach stapling are also included in these numbers. The figure in the UK alone was 8,085 admissions in one year.

The reason I raise this point is because my obeservations over the past decade teaching, coaching and speaking to thousands of people, is that when human beings are not fulfilled, feel depressed or have a serious lack in their lives, food is often an immediate source of comfort. It is used as a way of “filling” a void that exists in their lives. The eating starts small and then can become compulsive.

Bearing in mind that we have arguably experienced the largest recession (credit crunch) in our living history then it is my belief that there is likely to be a direct relationship between the poor economic climate of the general public and the type and amount of food they eat.

People tend to eat worse in times of economic strife – meaning, poor quality food, larger amounts of it (often snacking and eating “crap” basically). This leads to a negative spiralling effect. Energy drops, depression can even set in, the mindset shifts further and further into the dark pit and the apathy grows stronger. This leads to inactivity, a drop in self-esteem and the cycle continues.

Not a happy subject – but one to be aware of. You are what you eat. Let me say that again – you are what you eat. If you want to increase your mental awareness, aptitude, attitude, energy, passion, vitality, virility and wealth – then start to look at what you eat and what you drink. I will talk more on this over the coming months. The biggest thing to remember here is that the largest cause of premature deaths is degenerative diseases – period (as the Americans would say). Which can be stopped through correct diet and in particular by avoiding obesity.

Many of you have been asking me about the presentation I am giving on 18th January at the Berkshire Property Meet. I wanted to let you know it has SOLD OUT completely, over 250 people I believe.

Over this last year as I have been out speaking to different audiences, I have been approached more and more by people who see me speak and want to develop the skills for speaking. I have decided to share some of my speaking tips with you.

I have included below a short extract from some material I am currently writing for speakers  – this particular extract deals with how to build a quick rapport with your audience.  We are planning to bring out a DVD shortly on this subject – so watch this space.

“Another effective way of creating humor at an early stage is to playfully make fun of yourself.  In my case because I have a bald head I will often make reference at the beginning of presentation to some humorous link with my bald head.  I may even ask the audience to repeat “Yes” to me in response to a question that I ask and then to reinforce it ask them to say “yes baldy”. This immediately puts a smile on the face and at the same time allows them to relate to a more natural human side to me, thus breaking the speaker-audience barrier that can sometimes exist initially. As a speaker this is a very powerful connection tool to develop an early stage with your audience. The more you can be authentic and real from an early start in your presentation, the more rapidly you will develop a strong connection with your audience…. Have fun!

This is an exciting time for many people. More so because we are at the end of the first decade of the 21st Century – and more importantly, the start of the next decade. Why do I say more importantly? Because for many, certain milestones  tend to hit us harder than others. At these milestones we tend to reflect more, question our relationships, our health, what we have and have not achieved, we reflect on our wealth or lack of it, we also “sit-up” and start to set goals that we genuinely want to achieve (that maybe we have let slip in the past). I believe we are at one of those milestone points now. Classic examples of such points in our lives include:

  • end of a decade and the start of another
  • the new year
  • start of a new millennium
  • when we hit certain ages: 18, 21, 30, 40, 50 etc
  • our first child ( an experience I have had in the last 14 months)
  • our kids hit a certain age: 10, 18!
  • our parents hit their 60’s and 70’s
  • when people we know well die (another experience I had this year)

So what does this all mean? In reality, nothing changes, only the meaning we put on the events. Whether it is 2010 or 2011, if you have a passion to change your life, new decade or not, you have to take action.

This year for me is about getting that message across…this is the year of the BALD TRUTH. I want to share from the heart, share as much as I can and hopefully resonate at a frequency that will attract the people who want to change and those that want to help others.

Remember, in order to change we start on the inside. That is where you need to start on this day, 1st January 2010. I am going to be speaking at several events this month: 18th, 21st, 24th and possibly 25th January. Plus an event for Rich Dad Education at the end of January. I recommend you visit the events page on my site to find out more and book yourself. It will be well worth the time.

Also look out for the webinars and the free ebooks coming out.
