I was asked recently why I wrote the TURNING POINT and the same question arose in my discussion with Sue Marchant during the discussion for my recent BBC Radio interview about the book (the recording will be made available soon). So I would like to briefly discuss why I wrote the turning point with you.
I think virtually everyone I have ever met has described some event that happened in their life that resulted in a major TURNING POINT – we all have a reference to an emotional or challenging or uplifiting expereince that changed the way we thought, acted, lived or did things. Actually – if you have any that come to mind it would be great if you could add a comment in this BLOG to share one of your turning points.
For most people though, and I include myself in this category in the past – the TURNING POINT nearly always happens as a result of a series of events that happen TO US. I have met and spoken with thousands of people over the years as a speaker, coach and mentor and the stories range from personal tragedy, loss of a loved one, or economic challenges like bankruptcy or the loss of a job or a business failure or it may be a relationship breakdown like a divorce or finding that your partner has cheated on you. When these things happen to us they turn our lives upside down, or around or simply leave us asking deeper questions – these events cause us to change directions, in other words, they create TURNING POINTS for us whether we like it or not.
Here is the fascinating thing I observed, virtually everyone I spoke with said “That turning point was the things that changed my life for ever and for the better”. They say I would never have been able to do X, or I would never have met my current wife, or would never have started my business that I have today or I would never have taken a career change and been so successful or I would never have been so healthy had that not happened to me. The REALITY is that these TURNING POINTS are profound and they change the way we see the world, the way we interpret what we see and how we act. We become DIFFERENT people as a result.
I also realised as a result of a series of personal turning points that I describe in the book – that WE don’t have to wait for things to happen to us, you and I can create the turning points we want, whenever we want and we can re-design how we show up in the world, what we choose to believe about the world, at ANY TIME. We can CHOOSE – and that is why I wrote the TURNING POINT. To show people, step by step how to literally turn any area of their life around – to re-direct it in such a way that they have control, rather than someone or something having control.
Whether it is your business that need turning around, your health is not where you want it to be, your finances are OK or crap and need improving dramatically, or your relationship is flat, or needs an injection of new life – maybe you are single and don’t want to be anymore! Or it could be that you are fed up with you current job and are ready for a change – all these situations and many more require concious effort to create TURNING POINTs. So my message is this – don’t wait for things to happen to you.
Act now – choose to create your own TURNING POINT – choose to take back control in the area that you feel you have lost it and re-design your LIFE – that is why I wrote the book. That is the Bald Truth – no bullshit – black and white – taking control, living with passion and purpose and enjoying the moment…
