Mistakes to Avoid When Starting a Business
As a business mentor, one of the first things I like to do when I sit down with someone who is just getting started with their business is to make sure that they know about the business mistakes that a lot of start up businesses make. Here are some of the typical mistakes that are made at start-up:
Being Generic
One of the biggest business mistakes that people make when they are starting a business is that they are selling something generic, instead of choosing something that is specialized. When I am mentoring clients, I tell them that they need to stand out from others. To be a success in any business, it’s essential that you make customers intrigued and show them that you have something that is different from all the others. To coin a cliché term that has been used of for many years, you need a unique selling point (USP).
Not Planning
Another one of the big business mistakes to avoid when starting a business is not planning. People are excited because they have an idea about starting a business, but beyond the idea, what are they going to do? When I am talking to clients, I compare this to baking a cake. You want to bake a cake, but do you have the ingredients that you need? If you don’t plan when you are going to bake a cake, then you have to run around getting the ingredients before the cake is a success. The same thing is true when you are starting a business. There are ingredients that you need to have in starting a business. If you don’t have those ingredients before you start it, then you may find that you have missed the opportunity.
Not Researching – Not doing enough due dilligence
The third one of the big business mistakes to avoid when starting a business is not doing some research on the target market and finding out what they want from the company’s products and services. If you don’t do the required research and find out what potential customers are looking for, how will you know how to fulfill your customers’ needs? This is fundamental and essential. It would be like creating a new product, setting up a shop to sell it only to find out that people are not really looking for that product. This is more common that you might think.
Not Exploring Options
Finally, one of the biggest business mistakes to avoid when starting a business is not exploring the different options available to them. This is especially true in advertising. Even though one form of advertising may seem like the best choice, a business owner may miss out on a lot of great opportunities by not having a few forms of advertising that they employ. Being creative and imaginative is essential – especially in this day and age. Different people notice different types of advertising, and the more types of advertising that a business does, the better chance that they are going to have of being a success.
When you are first starting out in business, it’s easy to overlook things that can be very important to the business being a success. You are very excited at the beginning of you business venture, and it’s easy to forget items that you may not have forgotten otherwise because you are rushing around busy being busy. The key is preparation – plain and simple, careful planning and preparation.
You have to learn to look ahead, anticipate the potential pitfalls and assess them without emotion. Business is about provide solutions to people and making a profit from the value you offer. In order to do this you have to look in detail at the process necessary to achieve this goal and ask “what could go wrong?” – “what would be the worst case scenario” and plan for it.
